Two Albanians arrested in Malta, accused of a series of robberies in private residences

Authorities in Malta have arrested two Albanian nationals. Their arrest comes after they are accused of a series of robberies at private residences in the area. The arrested are aged 33 and 46.
According to authorities, the Albanians are believed to be part of an international organized crime group. Police said the two Albanians had left Malta shortly after the robberies. They were identified as returning to the country on a flight that arrived in Malta in the early hours of Friday morning.
The two men were arrested upon their arrival at Malta International Airport and will appear in court before Judge Jean Paul Grech later on Saturday. Police investigations are ongoing.
CCTV footage that captured the burglaries showed a man with a flashlight in a bedroom in a house on February 23 and a group walking down a hallway on February 26. The perpetrators were very professional as they targeted a house and waited for the owners to be inside before the alarms went off.
In one case, a family of seven only discovered their home had been burgled hours later when they discovered jewellery missing from the bedroom. Such incidents have raised fears that criminals are conducting surveillance before they strike. Last year, Europol published a report that places Malta among the five countries most affected by organised crime gangs that carry out burglaries and robberies. In the summer of 2018, another wave of burglaries in private homes was carried out by a criminal organisation.
