Britain/ Asylum offices are ordered to verify only the cases of Albanians to

The Home Office of Great Britain has ordered asylum offices to work only with requests from Albanians in order to speed up their deportation, forcing immigrants from other nations to suffer longer waits, reports the British media The Independent.

Sources say the drive, codenamed "Operation Bridora" aims to declare as many applications made by Albanians as "totally baseless" as possible and to remove people from the UK after an increase in the number of those who go to this country in dinghies and small boats.

There are concerns that decisions will be delayed for thousands of Afghans, Iranians, Syrians and asylum seekers from all over the world, with many already waiting years to find out if they will be granted protection.

"This is discrimination," a source familiar with the operation, which began on Monday, told The Independent. "The ``clearly unfounded claims'' law does not apply equally to claimants from other countries."

Of the more than 140,000 asylum applications awaiting an initial decision in the United Kingdom, around 16 percent (22,900) are from Albanians.

More than 16,000 outstanding claims relate to Iranians, 14,5000 to Iraqis, 9,000 to Afghans and about 7,000 to Syrians and Eritreans.

A two-decade-old law ranks Albania among countries, including Ukraine, where the Interior Ministry can declare asylum claims from citizens "clearly unfounded" because they are considered safe.
