Elon Musk criticized Italian judges for returning immigrants from Albania, Mattarella "scolds" the billionaire: Italy knows how to take care of itself
Italian President Sergio Mattarella has criticized Elon Musk after the tech mogul became embroiled in a debate over the country's EU immigration policies. Italy "can take care" of itself while the billionaire "cannot give himself the task" of giving advice, Mattarella asserted.
In a series of posts on X on Tuesday, Musk attacked Italian judges, saying they were wrong to oppose Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's plans to spend about $850 million to transfer asylum seekers from Italy to newly built processing centers in neighboring Albania.
"These judges need to go," Musk wrote, referring to officials from Rome who on Monday suspended Meloni's initiative to combat illegal immigration.
The Immigration Court in Rome has overturned the detention and transfer of seven migrants rescued at sea and sent to Albania for processing, resulting in their return to Italy.
"This is unacceptable. Do the people of Italy live in a democracy or does an unelected autocracy make the decisions?" Musk wrote in a follow-up post on Wednesday.
The billionaire's outbursts drew a scathing response in a post on X from the Italian head of state.
Without naming the tech mogul, Mattarella made it clear he was referring to Musk, writing: "Italy is a great democratic country and ... knows how to take care of itself by respecting its Constitution."
"Anyone, especially if he is to assume an important government role in a friendly and allied country as he has been warned, must respect his sovereignty and cannot ascribe to himself the duty of giving advice," the statement said.
Musk issued a response through his Italian representative, expressing "respect" for Mattarella and Italy's constitution, but reaffirming his intention to "continue to freely express his opinions."
The entrepreneur said he conveyed the same message in a "friendly" phone call with Meloni, adding that he "hopes for ever stronger ties between the United States and Italy and looks forward to a future meeting with President Mattarella."
