Karamuço: MATRIX was used a lot by contract killers, including Albanians

Criminalistics expert Ervin Karamuço spoke this Tuesday on Now with Erla Mëhilli, on Euronws Albania, about the breaking of the MATRIX communication network.
He said MATRIX was a service created by crime figures and was first discovered by Dutch authorities on the phone of a criminal convicted of sniping a Dutch journalist in 2021.
Karamuço said that 2.3 million messages and servers have been found and it is known that in 33 languages decoded during the investigation it is confirmed that it was used by Albanian criminal groups, mainly by paid killers who have declared it themselves not only in SPAK but also in other prosecutions.
" The hired killers used it a lot because there they talked about all the technicalities, how the execution should be done, the ways of killing, the meeting points and every element and detail about the killing order ," said Karamuço.
"Of course, it will take time to divide the folders for the respective states. By breaking the MATRIX, messages related to serious crimes, such as international drug trafficking, arms trafficking and money laundering, will be revealed. The breaking of the MATRIX will cause another earthquake because there will be information that will shock many people because we will talk about terrible events that happened in Albania, about how people were killed, about how people disappeared or how they were maimed before they disappeared", says Karamuço.
Karamuço said that the MATRIX service was purchased with cryptocurrencies because it did not identify the user.
We recall here that a joint investigative team (JIT), involving French and Dutch authorities, has dismantled another sophisticated encrypted messaging service, MATRIX. For three months, authorities were able to monitor potential criminals' messages, which will now be used to support other investigations. The infrastructure to run MATRIX consisted of more than 40 servers in several countries with important servers located in France and Germany, according to Europol.
