Journalist Ervin Leka has brought to A2CNN new details about the gas cylinder explosion in Durrës, where a 25-year-old from Bangladesh lost his life as a result of asphyxiation, while another person is in the hospital. He stressed that the main cause is related to a gas leak at night and poor technical conditions in the environment where the employees lived.
" One of these people, actually originally from Bangladesh, 25 years old, has lost his life as a result of asphyxiation, so not from the fire, but due to smoke and easily flammable materials, such as resin and other materials that were in the kitchen and in this silo that was used for building ships or boats. Two employees who were there, in the place where they stayed after work, since today was a day off, Sunday, had a specific place where they lived and carried out their activity outside of work. There were also other people, so not only two injured, where one unfortunately died and the other is receiving medical assistance, but also about five or six other people who were very close to them, but fortunately were able to get out." - said journalist Ervin Leka.
Leka also emphasizes that the leaking gas pipe and the unsafe construction of the kitchen are the main suspicions of the preliminary investigations. This indicates a wider problem, the lack of safety standards in workplaces where immigrants and foreign workers work. The incident highlights the need for stricter technical controls and for the protection of workers' lives, especially in dangerous sectors such as shipbuilding.
" There are suspicions that there were poor technical conditions regarding the kitchen and the gas part that was inside. It is suspected of a gas pipe leak, which led to the room filling with gas and then the spark when they tried to cook. According to preliminary investigations, they started cooking at around 7:40 or a little earlier, to start today, and unfortunately the explosion occurred, as the room was suspected to be filled with gas from the leak that occurred during the night. When they woke up, there was a spark and the room caught fire." - said journalist Ervin Leka
