Changes to the Police Law, the union warns of sending it to the Constitutional

As a draft law amending the law on the State Police has been submitted to the Assembly, the Police Employees Union is demanding radical changes, not "patches" that do not strengthen the blue officers or the very functioning of the organization.

"From a technical point of view, it is to regulate some procedures for which difficulties have been encountered in the appointment of general directors and department directors. If there is to be an initiative to change the law, the range of opinions should be expanded. Let's make another law that is more effective than this one, because we think that there are many reductions that should be made to the existing law," said the union representative.

The union says it will be part of the consultations and will provide points where it disagrees with the current law, and if they do not have support, they may challenge the Police Law in the Constitutional Court.

"The only option given to the union is to present or amend all those articles or changes that we have requested from the Assembly, or we will address the Constitutional Court for those articles that conflict with the rights it had under previous laws, as well as those articles that conflict with the constitution and the labor code," he said.

The Police Union is requesting amendments to eight articles of the current law, specifically: Articles 17, 56, 65, 69, 96, 105, 110, 116. These articles relate to the benefit of income from fines for the police station that has given it, in the amount of 50%, the inclusion of the Union and several other institutions in the commission for the selection of the new police chief, the restoration of three ranks at the executive level, the removal of the age of admission to the Police, membership in the Union or various international and national associations of officers, life insurance for officers, remuneration for seniority in work, and the removal of points f, g, gj and h, of Article 116, since the rights of the officer are violated with unnecessary, unconstitutional restrictions./Lapsi.al
