Report of the European Asylum Agency: Albania and Kosovo lead in the Balkans for the highest number of asylum seekers in EU countries
Citizens from Albania and Kosovo lead with a clear difference compared to other countries of the Balkan region in terms of the number of asylum requests to the European Union, in the first half of this year.
The latest report of the European Asylum Agency (EUAA) states that 3,778 asylum applications were submitted for the first time in a European Union country by citizens of Albania from January to June this year.
The highest number of asylum requests of citizens from Albania was registered in Italy, Greece and France
Even the number of requests for asylum from citizens of Kosovo in a country of the European Union was high, marking 3,375 requests in the first half of this year.
Meanwhile, other countries of the Balkan region have a lower number of requests of their citizens presented for the first time for asylum in a country of the European Union in the first 6 months of this year.
According to the EUAA report, citizens of North Macedonia submitted 1,872 requests for asylum, Serbia 1,660 requests, Bosnia and Herzegovina 750 requests and Montenegro 182 requests.
From the data published earlier by the European Asylum Agency, about 2,700 requests of citizens from Albania collected during the past year are waiting to be examined, while the rate of recognition of asylum is very low for Albanian citizens, not over 3 percent of the total requests that are presented in the countries of the European Union.
Meanwhile, according to a newly published report of the European Statistics Agency EUROSTAT, citizens from Albania also make up the highest number of residence permits obtained in a European Union country during 2023 from the Balkan region.
According to EUROSTAT, 74,938 citizens from Albania received a residence permit for the first time in a European Union country in 2023, while there were 45,568 citizens from Kosovo who were provided with a residence permit.
According to EUROSTAT, around 41,760 Albanians received residence permits for family reasons, 13,144 for other unspecified reasons, and 2,450 for educational reasons.
