The two areas most damaged by the quarries / From physical violence against residents to indiscriminate explosives that damage their homes
In the Vetting show on News24, the activity of the quarries was addressed, the problems they cause not only in the environment, but also in the daily life of citizens, seriously endangering their health.
The show stops especially in the areas where the activity of the quarries is massively destroying at least two of the areas where the highest number of this business operates, Dimali and Kruja.
Experts raise the alarm that quarries are destroying flora and fauna, while residents of the areas complain that indiscriminate explosions are damaging and destroying homes, especially when they are close to quarries.
From above the cities that are affected by the concrete cartels, you can see giant hollows, where massive parts of the mountain slopes have been torn, where the approach that we as a society have had for decades to nature, to life is revealed.
These wounds opened by the quarries that develop the activity without criteria do not only bring the destruction of the Albanian nature, but are a threat to the future, to the generations to come. The huge spots of carnage on the mountains and hills create a destroyed landscape, where the substrata of the earth can be seen, which have lost the organic part from which the vegetation is nourished.
Very close to the cities, these construction sites continue to spread rapidly throughout the territory of Albania, although this fact has long been a problem for the residents near them. Residents have been harmed and continue to be harmed by the problems brought about by the quarries, most of which operate in violation of every legal procedure, starting with the way they process the raw material. The polluting smoke that residents complain about requires water treatment to block the rise of carcinogenic particles that are dangerous to health.
According to biologist Olsi Nika from "ECOALBANIA", quarries have serious consequences for the environment and people. "All the particles suspended in the air are the ones that are the main concern, which in fact do not only harm the biota, only the living world, but also directly harm people if these units are placed near residential centers," he said to "Vetting" Olsi Nika.
The presence of these natural resources near communities is creating new foci for social conflicts. These conflicts remain silent as they accumulate and through protests they mobilize the rural population and organizations for the protection of human rights.
In this episode, "Vetting" will deal with the problems brought by the quarries in the area of Dimal in Berat and in Krujë, which are the two areas most damaged by this activity.
Physical and verbal violence against the residents by the owners of the quarries, clashes and protests, destruction of houses and the environment by explosives without criteria, pollution of the environment, erosion, and above all the total annihilation of the natural ecosystem, all under the indifference of law enforcement institutions.
The latter react only when the problem becomes public, casting a shadow of doubt on the corruption that may have hidden threads between the owners of the quarries and the corrupt leaders of the institutions.
According to the environmental expert, Abdulla Diku, Albania presents a unique case in terms of natural resource management.
"We don't have any other country in the region, at least, not in Europe, not in Europe, which misuses the natural resources, the mountains in this way," said Abdulla Diku for "Vetting".
