110-year-old woman votes in the American elections: I have faith in Harris
At 110 years old, Viola Ford Fletcher, the oldest survivor of the Tulsa Massacre, today cast her vote in Oklahoma for Vice President Kamala Harris. "It's very important to vote, and I feel really good about that," said Fletcher, who is one of the oldest voters in her state.
Fletcher, accompanied by her grandchildren, Ike Howard and Tracey Flemons, voted at a polling station in Tulsa, in a room called "Greenwood" — the name of the black neighborhood that was destroyed during the racial massacre. Greenwood, known as "Black Wall Street", was the site of one of the most horrific moments of racial violence in US history.
Lesie Benningfield Randle, another survivor of that massacre, now 109 years old, voted last week by mail for Harris. "I don't know how long I will live.
This may be my last vote and I'm glad I gave it to Kamala. I have 5 children and more than 20 grandchildren. "Vice President Harris is best able to build the nation the way I want them to inherit," the 109-year-old said.
103 years ago, the city of Tulsa in Oklahoma would be hit by one of the most brutal acts of racial discrimination in the history of the United States. A mob of whites burned and leveled every building in what was known as the business center of this city, leaving behind 300 dead among the African-American community. Before the massacre, in the Greenwood district, on the so-called Black Wall Street, lived one of the richest African-American business communities in the country.
