UN Assembly votes today on the creation of a Palestinian state

The United Nations General Assembly is expected to vote this Friday on a resolution proposed by France and Saudi Arabia, which aims to revive the two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, excluding Hamas from the political process.
The document includes condemnation of the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, demands the release of all hostages, and calls for an end to the war in Gaza. The statement emphasizes that Hamas must end its rule in the territory and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority, with international support, as a step towards the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state.
The resolution also calls for "collective action to end the war in Gaza and to achieve a just, peaceful and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on the effective implementation of the two-state solution."
The Israeli government has strongly opposed the creation of a Palestinian state and has criticized the UN for its focus on its actions, accusing the organization of failing to punish Hamas. Tel Aviv has described the potential recognition of a Palestinian state as a "price for terror."
Today's vote comes ahead of an international summit in New York on September 22, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, where French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged that Paris will formally recognize a Palestinian state. Several other countries have expressed similar positions.
