Austria offers 1,000 euros for every Syrian refugee to return home

Austria's conservative government announced today that it is offering Syrian refugees a return bonus of one thousand euros to return to Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Chancellor Karl Nehammer said the security situation in Syria must be reviewed to allow the return of Syrian refugees.

"Austria will support Syrians who want to return to their homeland with a return bonus of one thousand euros. The country now needs its citizens to rebuild it," Nehammer wrote on the X network.

The return of Syrian refugees against their will is not possible until it becomes clear in which direction Syria will go.

For now, the Austrian government has announced that it will focus on voluntary returns. It also stopped processing asylum claims.

Syrians make up the largest number of asylum applications in Austria. A one-way, economy-class ticket to Beirut, the usual departure point for those continuing overland to Damascus, currently costs at least 1,660 euros on Turkish Airlines, according to the company's website.
