BBC complains to Apple: Artificial Intelligence created fake news
The BBC has complained to Apple about fake headlines generated by its new feature, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to summarize and group news on the iPhone.
The new 'Apple Intelligence' feature recently launched in the UK uses AI to shorten and summarize news. However, this week the new article misrepresented that the BBC had published a story saying that Luigi Mangione, arrested on suspicion of murdering New York insurance executive Brian Thomson, had committed suicide, a claim that was not true.
The BBC said it had contacted Apple to draw its attention to the problem and request that the error be corrected. The British media network emphasizes that for them it is extremely important that their users trust the information that is distributed under their name.
Other news organizations have faced similar problems, according to the BBC.
In late November, the Apple Intelligence function mistakenly combined three different news items into a single notification that read "Netanyahu was arrested," which was a misinterpretation of a report about an international warrant for the Israeli prime minister.
This new Apple feature is only available on some iPhone and iPad devices, as well as Mac computers. Experts warn that it is still necessary to improve the technology to prevent the spread of misinformation.
