BBC apologizes to Trump for editing speech, but refuses to pay damages

The BBC has apologised to US President Donald Trump after an episode of its Panorama programme was found to have edited parts of a speech by him, changing the context of the statements. However, the corporation has rejected Trump's claim for financial compensation.

According to the BBC, the program will no longer be broadcast, while the president's lawyers have warned of lawsuits of up to $1 billion if an official retraction is not made, an apology is not demanded, and compensation is not offered.

The demand for an apology has intensified after the Daily Telegraph uncovered a second, similarly edited clip, which was broadcast on Newsnight in 2022.

A BBC spokesperson stated that the corporation's lawyers have responded to Trump's legal team, while the BBC's chairman, Samir Shah, has also sent a personal letter to the White House apologizing to the president for the way his January 6, 2021 speech was edited.

The BBC has confirmed that the documentary "A Second Chance?", which deals with the figure of Trump, will not be rebroadcast on any of the corporation's platforms.

However, the British institution emphasizes that, despite the editing errors, it sees no legal basis for a defamation lawsuit.
