The EU stops hundreds of millions of euros from the funds intended for Hungary, here's the reason
The European Union on Wednesday began the process of returning hundreds of millions of euros in funds meant to go to Hungary after its anti-migrant government refused to pay a huge fine for violating asylum rules.
In June, the EU's highest court ordered Hungary to pay 200 million euros for continuing to deprive migrants of their right to apply for asylum.
He also charged him with an additional fine of one million euros for each day until the payment of the obligation. The spokesperson of the European Commission, Balazs Ujvari, said in a press conference on Wednesday that the EU will now deduct 200 million euros from future payments from the EU budget for Hungary.
He has called this a compensation procedure, taking money from joint funds that would otherwise have gone to Budapest.
Ujvari said that the Commission has also sent the first request for the payment of daily fines, which amounts to almost 100 million euros.
