Bulgaria records the first case of cholera in over 100 years
Bulgaria has recorded its first case of cholera, the first in more than 100 years, the national public health watchdog said.
The watchdog's official report said a 23-year-old Indian man, who lives in Bulgaria, was hospitalized with acute diarrhea in Sofia. From August 13 to September 2, he was in India and fell ill after returning to the Bulgarian capital. The diagnosis of fatal infection was confirmed by laboratory tests.
Another person who was in contact with the patient has also been isolated. Both patients are in stable condition. The hospital has established strict anti-epidemic procedures and is carrying out disinfection measures.
The previous case of cholera was recorded in Bulgaria in 1921.
Cholera is an extremely serious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae and is spread through contaminated food or water.
