Ukrainian drones strike Moscow, biggest attack on Russian capital
Ukraine attacked Moscow on Sunday with at least 34 drones, the biggest such attack on the Russian capital since the war began in 2022. The attack left one person injured while forcing flights to avoid Moscow's three main airports.
Russian air defenses destroyed 36 drones over other regions in western Russia during a wave of attacks that lasted three hours on Sunday, the Defense Ministry said.
"An attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack using an aircraft-type drone on the territory of the Russian Federation was thwarted," the ministry said.
Russia's federal air transport agency said Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky airports diverted at least 36 flights but later resumed operations. An injured person has been reported in the Moscow area.
Moscow and its region, with a population of at least 21 million, is one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe, next to Istanbul.
Meanwhile, Russia launched a record number of drones, 145 of them overnight, Ukraine reported. Kiev said its air defense shot down 62 of them. Ukraine also said it attacked a weapons depot in Russia's Bryansk region. Moscow announced that 14 drones had crashed in the region in question.
Russia's war in Ukraine is entering what some officials say could be its final act as Moscow's forces advanced at their fastest pace since the first days of the war, while the United States will have a new president. in January next year.
Republican Donald Trump, who will return to the White House on January 20, said during his campaign that he could bring peace to Ukraine within 24 hours, but did not provide details on how he could achieve this goal.
However, Moscow has said it is ready to listen to the American plan to end the conflict.
