Unbelievable/ Donald Trump threatens American city, could lose 2026 World Cup

Donald Trump has threatened to move World Cup matches to the suburbs of Boston next year, suggesting parts of the city have been "overrun" by unrest.

Foxborough, Massachusetts, home of the NFL team New England Patriots and about 30 miles from Boston, is scheduled to host several games as part of the U.S. co-hosting with Mexico and Canada for the 2026 World Cup.

Trump commented on Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, calling her “smart” but a “radical leftist.” He said, “We can take the games off. I love the people of Boston and I know the games are sold out, but your mayor is not fit.”

The president suggested that parts of Boston are "being taken under control" without giving further details, but added that "we can take them back in two seconds."

His comments come after a pro-Palestinian protest turned violent earlier this month on Boston Common, where several people were arrested and four police officers were injured.

Trump has previously suggested he could declare some cities “unsafe” for the 104-match tournament and change FIFA’s hosting plan, confirmed in 2022. However, the host countries are not up to Trump. The 11 American cities, plus three in Mexico and two in Canada, are contracted to FIFA, which would face legal and logistical challenges to change plans just eight months before kick-off on June 11.

Victor Montagliani, FIFA vice-president, declared: "It's FIFA's tournament, it's FIFA's jurisdiction, FIFA makes these decisions."

However, Trump said: "If someone doesn't do their job properly and there are unsafe conditions, I would contact Gianni, the head of FIFA who is phenomenal, and I would say: 'Let's move the game to another place' and they would easily do it."
