Investigators had followed his trail through several countries for three years. Now one of the main figures of the Miri clan risks up to 15 years in prison. He is suspected of large-scale drug trafficking.
The alleged boss of the clan known as Sammy Miri, 38, was extradited from Turkey to Germany. The public prosecutor's office of Dortmund and the Criminal Police Office of the State of Rhine-Westphalia announced this on Monday. There was an international arrest warrant against Mir – whose real name is Esmat E- – who has been leading one of the drug trafficking gangs for years.
When police searched his home on Lake Phönix in Dortmund in August four years ago, E. had already fled the country – first to Spain, but he was later discovered in the Turkish resort of Antalya. Turkish police arrested him there in mid-March. Investigators from the Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office and federal authorities had been looking for him extensively for three years.
Top leaders of the Miri clan are said to have exchanged information using encrypted Encrochat communication and were exposed after French investigators managed to decipher the cryptocommunication in 2020.
Esmat E. risks up to 15 years in prison. His brother Ziad E. was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2022 for drug trafficking.
