Illegal immigrants, Trump: We will begin the largest deportation operation in
President Donald Trump's incoming administration is planning a major anti-immigration operation in Chicago on his second day in office, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited four people familiar with the plan.

The operation, which is expected to begin on Tuesday, will last throughout the week, according to the newspaper, which added that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency will deploy 100 to 200 officers for the purpose.

The transition team did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters news agency.

"And if the mayor of Chicago doesn't want to help, he can stand aside. But if he obstructs us, if he knowingly protects or harbors an illegal immigrant, I will prosecute him,"  he was quoted as saying.

The issue of immigration was at the center of Mr. Trump's campaign for the November 5 presidential election.

"Minutes after my inauguration, we will begin the largest deportation operation in American history," Mr. Trump declared in January 2025.

President Trump is expected to mobilize agencies across the United States to help deport a record number of immigrants, continuing the efforts he made during his first term to make all resources available and pressure so-called immigrant-friendly states to cooperate.
