Still in court, Marine Le Pen: I will not run for president if the Court of

Marine Le Pen has declared that she will not run for the presidency of France in 2027 if the appeal confirms the previous decision banning her from holding public office.

The French far-right leader, who has run for president three times, will face court again on January 13 after appealing her conviction.

Le Pen was convicted of misusing funds from the European Parliament, a charge she has repeatedly denied. The court immediately gave her a five-year ban from running for public office, which can be overturned on appeal.

If Le Pen is found guilty again and banned from running for president, she has announced that she will hand over the leadership to 30-year-old Jordan Bardella.

“Given that the appeal will probably give its decision in September [2026], I will not allow the matter to drag on,” Le Pen told RTL. Presidential elections are due in the spring of 2027.

However, according to Politico, the exact date of the verdict will not be clear until the trial is over, giving Le Pen the opportunity to maneuver and retract her statement.

She could also appeal to the highest court if the appeal does not rule in her favor, but that does not appear to be an option she is considering. “If I am banned from running but the high court rules in my favor three or four months later, it will be too late for a proper electoral campaign,” Le Pen said.

An Elabe poll, published earlier this month, shows Le Pen and Bardella have a double-digit lead over their opponents in the first round of the election.
