Erdogan: No reason why Turkey's EU membership has been blocked for years

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated today that there is no reasonable explanation why Turkey's membership process has been blocked for years, stressing that Turkey's full involvement in the European Union's defense efforts is essential for Europe's peace and security. .

Erdogan delivered a speech at the General Assembly of the Summit of the European Political Community, which is taking place in Budapest.

He said that Turkey's full involvement in the European Union's defense efforts is essential for Europe's peace and security.

"There is no reasonable explanation why the accession process of an EU candidate country like Turkey, which makes important contributions, has been blocked for years," the Turkish president stressed.

Speaking about the Russia-Ukraine war, Erdogan said that "the negativity caused by the war in Ukraine is deepening day by day. The prolongation of the war leaves less and less room for diplomacy".

He said that in the past weeks he talked with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while in front of him he received the Ukrainian chief diplomat, Andrii Sybiha.

"I conveyed the message that we should give space to diplomacy", said Erdogan.

Erdogan also spoke about developments in the Middle East.

"The genocide that has been going on for a year in Gaza is the common shame of humanity. Added to this are the immoral and illegal attacks in the West Bank and Lebanon," Erdogan said, adding that "those who unconditionally support Israel's aggression should know that they have become complicit in the crimes committed."

The Turkish president also spoke about the fight against terrorist organizations.

"We want to see concrete cooperation from our European partners in the fight against the terrorist organization PKK", he said, adding that "we expect that our requests for judicial and administrative cooperation from European countries, where FETO has an active presence, will be met".

He emphasized that it is everyone's responsibility to fight against terrorism in cooperation and solidarity, without making any distinction between terrorist organizations.
