US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he was ready to move to a second phase of sanctions on Russia, remarks that suggest he is closer to increasing sanctions against Moscow or its oil buyers, due to frustration over the war in Ukraine.
Trump has repeatedly threatened Moscow with further sanctions but has suspended them while he pursues talks. Recent comments suggest an increasingly aggressive stance, but Trump has not said he is committed to such a decision or what such a second phase might entail.
Asked by a reporter at the White House whether he was ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia, Trump replied: "Yes, I am."
