Finland is hit by a hurricane for the first time in history, thousands of families without power
In western Finland, for the first time in history, the wind has reached hurricane force, as a result of which 17,000 homes have remained without electricity since Saturday.
In Rauma in the southwest of the country, the average wind speed on Friday evening reached 33.5 meters per second, in Pori – up to 30.3 m/s, reports the Finnish public service Yle.
A wind with an average speed of at least 33 m/s is considered a hurricane in Finland.
This is the first time a real hurricane has been recorded in Finland, meteorologist Mati Hutonen said.
" Such indicators have never been recorded in the history of observations, in this sense they are really rare ," said meteorologist on duty at the Meteorological Institute Tuomo Bergman.
According to him, on Friday evening the power was cut off in about 40 thousand houses in the west and south of Finland, while this morning 17 thousand houses were left without electricity.
