Gaza/ Hopes grow for ceasefire and hostage release

There is cautious optimism that a deal could be near for a ceasefire in the Gaza war and the release of hostages, as US national security adviser Jake Sullivan spoke of the possibility of a deal this week.

" The parties are on the verge of closing this agreement ," Sullivan said in Washington.

" Whether or not we go from where we are now to close it, the hours and days ahead will tell, but I think it's there to be taken and we're going to do everything we can to push it. to get it across the finish line ," he added.

According to Israeli media reports, a three-phase plan is underway in the Qatari capital, Doha.

This indirect negotiation between Israel and the Palestinian extremist group Hamas, in which Egypt and the United States are mediating along with Qatar, reportedly includes the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages held by Hamas, as well as the withdrawal of Israeli troops.

Both Israel and Hamas have previously reported significant progress.

Negotiations for a deal to end the 15-month conflict have stalled for months and have only recently regained momentum with the upcoming inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.
