Germany is speeding up visa procedures for foreign workers

The German Foreign Ministry is rapidly speeding up visa procedures for skilled workers needed by the economy, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told a Green party meeting in Berlin on Tuesday.
The waiting time for a visa at the German embassy in New Delhi had been cut to two weeks, Baerbock said.
"Before it was nine months", she added, attributing the change to digitization and centralization, foreign media write, Telegraph reports.
The ministry aims to digitize the entire visa procedure by the end of the current legislative period next year.
The number of national visas issued will have to increase by 63% according to the ministry's forecasts to accommodate the 400,000 people who need to enter Germany each year to keep the number of people in employment constant.
Baerbock, a member of the Greens, is currently engaged in a battle with Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the liberal FDP over funding for her IT and staffing plans as Lindner tries to cut spending to balance the budget.
At the meeting, Katharina Dröge, leader of the Greens parliamentary group, proposed a "social pact for a welcoming culture", calling for business, workers and politicians to complete the pact together.
