Paris court sends SARKOZY home, but on bail!

The Paris Court of Appeal ordered the release of Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday afternoon, following the conclusion of the former French president's hearing. Sarkozy, who described the 20 days he spent in prison (since October 21) as a "nightmare" during the hearing, will be placed under judicial supervision.

In addition, the court banned Sarkozy from having any contact with Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, who had visited him in prison at the end of October. This meeting had provoked criticism, mainly from judges.

According to reports, Sarkozy will leave the Santé prison in the center of the French capital later in the day.

Previously, the prosecutor had proposed to the Paris Court of Appeal that the former French president be released.

According to the reasoning of the prosecutor, Damien Brinet, "the extreme seriousness of the events and the severity of the punishment should not be taken into account. Only the criteria of Article 144 (of the Code of Criminal Procedure) are relevant."

As prosecutor Damien Brinet explained, the risks of collaborating with potential accomplices or pressuring witnesses "support the request to place [Sarkozy] under judicial supervision."
