A pair of shoes with cocaine hidden inside them led Greek police to the discovery of a drug ring operating in the Athens area and led by a prisoner.

The operation began on Friday after a tip-off from authorities, with police initially arresting a 71-year-old man at a bus station in Athens while he was delivering a package of shoes containing 20 grams of cocaine.

Investigations revealed that the drugs were obtained by a 58-year-old man, who is suspected of acting on behalf of another person who is in prison in Greece. During the operation, police also arrested a 52-year-old woman, suspected of aiding in the storage and mixing of the drugs.

Authorities seized 10.5 kilograms of heroin, 2.2 kilograms of cocaine, as well as smaller amounts of marijuana and ecstasy.

Large sums of money in various currencies were also found, including Thai, Korean, Chinese, Argentinean, Sri Lankan and United Arab Emirates banknotes.

According to Greek police, the total value of the drugs and money seized amounts to around 340 thousand euros.
