United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that after 14 years of brutal war and the fall of a dictatorial regime, "the people of Syria can seize a historic opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future."
" The future of Syria must be decided by the Syrian people and my special envoy will work with them to that end." I repeat my call for calm and avoidance of violence at this sensitive moment, protecting the rights of all Syrians ," Guterres said in a statement posted on the UN website.
Guterres stressed that "the immunity of diplomatic-consular missions and staff must be respected in all cases, in accordance with international law".
