The Netherlands wants to leave the EU rules on asylum, the request is submitted

The four parties of the governing coalition in the Netherlands, led by Prime Minister Dick Schoof, said they would fulfill their promise to secure a clause within the European Union on the issue of asylum.

The request has been submitted to the European Commission, asking for an exemption from the EU's migration and asylum system, as an unprecedented move by a member state.

"We must be responsible for our policies on asylum", declared Marjolein Faber, the Dutch minister for asylum and immigration. Faber, a member of the far-right Freedom Party led by Geert Wilders, praised the initiative.

"Faber makes history", wrote Wilders on Wednesday.

The Dutch authorities have said that through this initiative the aim is to drastically reduce the volume of illegal migration in the Netherlands.
