After the second apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump in recent months, some may wonder what would happen if he, or another presidential candidate, died before the election.
Under Republican National Committee (RNC) rules, a vacancy for the candidacy due to death would be filled in the same way a presidential candidate is chosen during the national convention.
The 168 members of the RNC, three from each US state, and three from the six territories of the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, would cast their votes and the candidate would was chosen by the majority.
It is a requirement that the RNC re-elect the new presidential nominee, so it would not automatically fall to Trump's nominee, JD Vance.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has similar rules, its 447 members would choose the new nominee after the DNC chair consults with party leaders in Congress and her state governors.
Typically, this candidate's name would then be placed on the ballot and the election would proceed as normal, however this would be deeply challenging if the vacancy arose close to the big day of November 5.
Indeed, while replacing printed ballots close to an election would not be an insurmountable challenge, millions of Americans vote early – up to 45 days before the election in some states.
In addition, states each have different deadlines for when parties can submit different candidate names to be on the ballot, which deadlines have likely already passed in most states.
Electoral college members may be expected by the electorate to count votes for a dead candidate as a vote for their replacement, but it is not clear that this would ultimately be consistent with the wishes of the voters, which could lead to disputes and judicial actions.
It is also possible that Congress could postpone an election, although this has never happened in US history.
