Declared a global terrorist by the US, who is the rebel leader who overthrew Assad? A $10 million bounty was placed on his head in 2013
In 2013, the US designated Jawlan as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and offered a $10 million reward for information leading to his capture.
But the rebel leader has been working for years to change the perception of his organization, aiming for it to be accepted by Syrians as an alternative to the Assad regime.
His Islamist militant group has played a key role in efforts to topple the Assad regime. HTS was established in 2012 under another name, the al-Nusra Front, and the following year gave its allegiance to al-Qaeda.
In 2016, Al-Nusra cut ties with al-Qaeda and took the name Hayat Tahrir al-Sham when it merged with other factions a year later.
However, the UN, the US, the UK and a number of other countries continue to regard HTS as a branch of al-Qaeda and often still refer to it as the al-Nusra Front.
