Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro found guilty of coup!

Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, was found guilty this Thursday of planning a military coup.

Three of five Supreme Court judges found the 70-year-old guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his leftist rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Although the plan failed to secure sufficient support from the military to be carried out, it ended with the attack on government buildings by Bolsonaro supporters on January 8, 2023, according to the judges.

According to the BBC, one judge found Bolsonaro not guilty and another has not yet voted, but a simple majority is enough to convict the former president, who could now face decades in prison. His sentence will be handed down on Friday.

The former president's fate was sealed on Thursday, when judge Carmén Lúcia cast her vote.

She found him guilty on all five charges: attempting to organize a coup d'état, leading an armed criminal organization, attempting to violently overthrow the democratic order, as well as two other charges related to property damage during the attack on buildings in Brasília on January 8, 2023.
