Israel bombs the south of Beirut, targeting Hezbollah facilities - Vizion Plus

The Israeli military bombarded the southern suburbs of Beirut with a series of airstrikes on Friday morning after initially ordering residents to leave, Reuters news agency reports.

Several buildings were destroyed in several neighborhoods of Dayiheh south of Beirut, according to Lebanon's state news agency. It is not known if there are any victims from these bombings.

The Israeli military said the targets of the attacks were Hezbollah facilities and assets. Israel has repeatedly repeated this position while carrying out attacks in the last two months in Lebanon.

Hezbollah, which controls southern Lebanon, has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted its armed wing but not its political party.

The bombings come after renewed but fruitless efforts by the United States and other countries to broker a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon to end a year of fighting between Israel and groups backed by Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas.

Hamas is declared a terrorist organization by the US and the EU. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday that Israel and Lebanon are working to understand what is needed to implement a violated UN resolution 1701, which would be the basis for ending the conflict.

But time is running out to find a solution before the November 5 US elections. Lebanese officials and analysts were pessimistic after news that the US envoy, Amos Hochstein, will not travel to Beirut from Israel, where he was on Thursday.

The conflict along the border between Hezbollah and Israel escalated into full-scale war last month, when Israel launched a wave of bombings across Lebanon and killed Hezbollah's top leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and most of his deputies.

Israeli ground forces entered Lebanon in early October. Hezbollah's newly appointed leader, Naim Qassem, said the militant group will continue fighting Israel until conditions are met for a ceasefire he deems acceptable.

About 1.2 million people have been displaced by the conflict in Lebanon, according to government estimates. Lebanon's Health Ministry said more than 2,800 people have been killed and 12,900 wounded since October 8, 2023, when Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel, prompting retaliation.
