Israel attacks Damascus, 15 killed and dozens injured

Fifteen people were killed and 16 others were injured as a result of Israeli attacks in Damascus, Syria. This marks one of the deadliest attacks in recent months on the Syrian capital. The attacks targeted several residential buildings in the capital's wealthy Mezzah neighborhood and the Qudsaya area in the Damascus countryside, Syrian state media reported. Among the killed are women and children.

Commanders of the armed group Hezbollah of Lebanon and Iran's Revolutionary Guard based in Syria are known to reside in Mazzeh, according to residents who fled after recent attacks that killed several key figures from the groups. Mazzeh's high-rises have been used by authorities in the past to house leaders of Palestinian factions including Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it was striking Islamic Jihad in Syria earlier Thursday and had "caused significant damage to the terrorist organization's command center and its operatives." Islamic Jihad is the second largest militant group in Gaza. The latest attack comes as Israeli airstrikes intensified in Syria over the weekend, killing at least seven civilians and injuring 20, according to Syrian state news agency SANA.

The area where the attacks took place, south of the city of Damascus, has a Hezbollah presence and has been attacked by Israel in recent weeks. On Wednesday, the Israeli military said it struck "smuggling routes" between Lebanon and Syria that it claims were used to transfer weapons to Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guard has made new threats against Israel, promising "revenge" for the Jewish state's late October attack on Iranian military facilities and also for Israeli attacks in Gaza and Lebanon. "We will take revenge, you will receive painful blows, keep waiting," Pasdaran commander Hossein Salami said, international media reported, during a ceremony in Tehran commemorating the number of Palestinians killed during Israel's attacks in the past.
