Israel warns that attack on Iran will be "deadly" and

Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, said on Wednesday that Israel's attack against Iran will be "lethal, precise and surprising".

He made these comments as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on the phone with US President Joe Biden on Wednesday.

The phone conversation, confirmed by both countries, was the first between Biden and Netanyahu since August and coincides with a major escalation in Israel's conflict with Iran and Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese group.

Neither Washington nor Natenyah's office offered details on what was discussed.

Hezbollah, which controls southern Lebanon, has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted its armed wing but not its political party.

The Middle East is on edge as Israel has vowed to retaliate against Iran for Tehran's missile attack on it in retaliation for Israel's military actions in Lebanon.

The Iranian attack reportedly caused no casualties in Israel and Washington called it ineffective.

After dismissing Iran's Oct. 1 missile attack as a failure, Gallant said Wednesday in a video released by his office: "Anyone who attacks us is going to get hurt and they're going to pay dearly. Our attack will be deadly, precise and above all, surprising. They will not understand what happened and how it happened, they will see the consequences".

Netanyahu has vowed that his arch-enemy Iran will pay dearly for the missile attack, while Tehran has said it will respond harshly to any Israeli retaliation, raising fears of a wider war in the Middle East.

Relations between Biden and Netanyahu have been tense, due to the way the Israeli leader has managed the war in Gaza and the conflict with Hezbollah.

Gallant canceled a visit Wednesday to the Pentagon, the Pentagon said. Gallant said in a statement that he had postponed the visit at Netanyahu's request until after the prime minister's conversation with Biden.

Iran fired hundreds of missiles at Israel on October 1, escalating the conflict between the two countries. Israel has long been considering how to respond to the Iranian attack, which the United States helped stop./ REL
