Israel orders Palestinians to evacuate southern Gaza

This is the first time in recent weeks that Israel has called on residents in the south of the Palestinian territory to leave the south, as the Israeli army has been focusing its military campaign in northern Gaza since October.

"Terrorist organizations have once again fired rockets at the State of Israel from your area," Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said on X, addressing residents of the Han Yunis area.

"For your safety, you must immediately evacuate the area and move to the humanitarian zone," he said, releasing a map of the area where residents have been ordered to evacuate.

Earlier on December 2, the Israeli military said in a statement that "a shell passed into Israeli territory from Han Yunis and the missile was shot down" by Israeli forces.

Hamas later claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it fired rockets into southern Israel.

The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people—mostly civilians—and kidnapping nearly 250 others.

As a result of the Israeli offensive, more than 44,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, most of them civilians, and the territory has suffered great material damage./REL
