Israelis apply for German passports
After the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, the number of Israelis who have applied for German citizenship has increased significantly. According to the announcement of the Ministry of Interior, during the first nine months of this year, 18,448 requests came from Israel.

Last year the number of requests was 9,178, while in 2022 there were 5,705 requests. This statistic does not include Israeli citizens living in other countries.

Facilitated process for descendants of victims of Nazism

As of August 2021, those persecuted by the Nazi regime and their descendants have the right to become German citizens. Descendants of victims of the Nazi regime, who were forced to leave Germany to escape Nazi persecution, can receive German citizenship as a form of reparation without having to meet other conditions.

The relevant decrees of the Ministry of the Interior on obtaining citizenship as compensation have thus received a legal basis and the process of obtaining citizenship has been facilitated.

After Israel, the majority of claims for reparation citizenship come from the US, but their number is quite low compared to claims from Israel. /DW
