Romanian President Klaus Iohannis resigns

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced that he was resigning from this position.

This announcement comes as the Romanian opposition was making an attempt to oust him from office, as he remained as president even after the Constitutional Court's decision to annul the presidential elections, the first round of which was won by the right-wing, pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu.

Klaus said on February 10 that he would step down as president in two days.

The Constitutional Court had asked him to remain in office as president even after his term ended in mid-December due to the annulment of the elections.

The Constitutional Court annulled the elections two days before the second round between Georgescu and the pro-European candidate, Elena Lasaconi, was to be held.

The court cited state documents that allegedly showed that Georgescu, who ran as an independent candidate, had benefited from an unfair campaign on social media, which was likely orchestrated by Russia.

Moscow has denied interfering in the elections in Romania.

New presidential elections are scheduled to be held on May 4, and if none of the candidates receives a majority, a second round will be held on May 18./REL
