Jimmy Carter, the longest-serving former president of the United States of America, celebrates his 100th birthday
Jimmy Carter, the longest-serving former president of the United States of America in history, turns 100 today.
A peanut farmer, Carter was elected governor of Georgia in 1971. He held the position until 1975.
The following year he was elected the 39th president of America. He served only one term in the White House, four years from 1977 to 1981.
His presidency was marked by two events, the 1978 Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, and the US hostage crisis in Iran, which contributed to his loss of a second term.
After being defeated in the presidential election by Ronald Reagan, Carter devoted his energy to the Carter Center, founded in 1982: it is an active center for health care, democracy and other issues.
His post-presidency efforts earned him the Nobel Prize in 2002.
Carter announced in 2015 that he was suffering from liver cancer that had spread to other parts of his body, for which he underwent several surgeries. Last August he told his son Chip that the only thing on his mind was defeating Donald Trump and that he hopes to live long enough to vote for Kamala Harris.
Early voting in Georgia, where Carter lives, will begin on October 15.
