A threat to the West?! Russia tests hypersonic missiles in the Mediterranean Sea

Russian President Vladimir Putin has today tested hypersonic missiles in the eastern Mediterranean as part of military exercises of the Russian Navy.

For some experts, missile testing in the Mediterranean can be considered a threat to the West, writes the Daily Mail.

Russian Navy frigates equipped with hypersonic cruise missiles of the new generation conducted exercises in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced today.

The frigate's crews fired hypersonic missiles against the Zircon ships, while a Russian submarine fired a Kalibr cruise missile, another weapon capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, the ministry said in its statement.

yesOn the adjacent coast, a missile system conducted a direct launch of an Onyx anti-ship missile, the statement said.

The military, which did not say where the drills took place, said the number of Russian troops stationed in the eastern Mediterranean had been "increased" to take part in the exercise.

333" On December 3, during an exercise to test the combined activities of groups of troops of the Russian Navy and the Air Force, precision sea-based missiles were launched in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea ," the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a post on Telegram.

Russian ships tested hypersonic Zirkon missiles and a Kalibr cruise missile, the ministry added. An Onyx cruise missile was also launched "from a designated area on the Mediterranean coast".

Russia has a naval base in Syria at Tartus, but the statement did not say where the drills took place.

The ministry released images showing the launch of several missiles and photos of a target in open water being hit and exploding.

11The missile test coincides with deep tension in Ukraine and is meant to show that the conflict now has a global reach beyond Russia and Ukraine.

222Russia has been a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, and al-Assad is said to be currently staying in Moscow with his family.

The exercises were conducted under the supervision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, who was sent to Syria a few days ago.

A key message of the Russian exercises in the Mediterranean may be the warning that Russia's seaport in Syria – Tartus – will be strongly defended.

A major reason for the rebel advance was that Putin had moved forces from Syria to fight in the Ukraine war.

“The exercise involves over 1,000 servicemen, ten ships and support vessels, 24 aircraft, including Russian Air Force MiG-31I fighters with Kinzhal [Dagger] hypersonic missiles and the Bastion coastal missile system. The exercise in the Eastern Mediterranean is being conducted in accordance with current international law, as well as agreements between the Russian Federation and foreign states on the prevention of incidents at sea outside territorial waters, as well as in the airspace above them,"  the Russian Ministry of Defense said.
