Israeli intelligence suggests Iran is preparing to attack Israel from Iraqi territory in the coming days, possibly before the November 5 US presidential election, Axios reported Thursday, citing two unnamed Israeli sources.
The attack is expected to be carried out by Iraq using a large number of drones and ballistic missiles, the Axios report added.
The report said that carrying out the attack through pro-Iranian militias in Iraq could be an attempt by Tehran to avoid another Israeli attack against strategic targets in Iran.
A New York Times report, citing three Iranian sources, said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had ordered Iran's Supreme National Security Council to prepare to strike Israel.
According to the report, Khamenei's decision came after an examination of the damage suffered by Iran's missile production infrastructure and air defense systems as a result of Israel's retaliatory attack last week.
