War in Ukraine/ German Chancellor Merz: Europe is not playing the right role in the world

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed concern that Europe is not playing the role it intends to in the international arena and that it needs to do more to protect its interests.

"What worries me and, I must admit, weighs on me, is the fact that we Europeans are currently failing to take on the role we want in the world, and that belongs to us in properly defending our interests," Merz declared in an interview with "CDU.TV", the official channel of his party, the Christian Democratic Union.

He cited the war in Ukraine as an example, saying: "Currently we are not able to exert sufficient pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop this war. We are dependent on American aid."

Merz also noted that countries like China, India and Brazil are building new partnerships with Russia, changing global balances.

Yet, despite his concerns, Merz welcomed signs of renewed European unity.

"This depends largely on the commitment of the German government and, in this case, especially on the commitment of the German Chancellor," he stressed.
