"Don't ask for favors from Putin and Kim", Zelensky criticizes the European leaders from Budapest

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on European leaders to apply the "peace through strength" approach to confront the threat posed by Russia.
Zelensky's appeal comes a day after Donald Trump won another term in the White House, raising uncertainty about Washington's future policy after he criticized the scale of US military and financial support for Kiev in its war with Russia. Zelensky, however, praised Trump's "commitment to the 'peace through strength' approach to global affairs".
In Thursday's speech at the European Political Community summit in Budapest, he echoed that comment.
"The concept of 'peace through strength' has proven its realism and effectiveness more than once. Now, it is needed once again."
Zelensky stressed that his country needed strong support from European leaders, some of whom he criticized for defending concessions to Russia.
"This is unacceptable for Ukraine and suicidal for all of Europe. And what comes next? Should Europe ask Kim Jong Un for favors in the hope that he too will leave Europe in peace? We need enough weapons, not just support for talks. Hugging Putin won't help."
For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that Europeans should write their own history in the future and not leave it to powers like the US, Russia and China.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said that the EU can no longer "transport" its security to the US after Trump's election victory. The European Political Community was founded after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 which was intended to illustrate Russia's isolation.
It includes the 27 EU countries as well as 20 other countries from Albania to Ukraine. Apart from Orbán, the other participants of the summit also maintain contacts with Putin. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended a summit of the so-called BRICS countries led by Putin in late October.
