Russia has warned the West and Ukraine of "catastrophic consequences" if Kiev moves against Russia's close ally Belarus, making clear it will intervene to defend a country that has deployed nuclear weapons.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters that Moscow was concerned about what she called increasingly "provocative" activity on the border with Belarus, noting that she did not rule out attempts to escalate the war in the region. .
Days after Ukraine's surprise cross-border attack on August 6 in Russia's Kursk region, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said, without giving details, that Kiev may be considering attacking Belarus.
" We take into account the information we received about the intensification of the activities of the Ukrainian forces in the border area ," noted Zakharova. " We see these events ourselves and are aware of the ongoing efforts by the Ukrainian side to use drones and send terrorists to the republic ," she added.
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry announced last month that the country has not taken and will not take any hostile action against the Belarusian people.
