New York Times reveals behind-the-scenes story: Elon Musk intervened to free Italian journalist Cecilia Sala from Iran

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk reportedly intervened to “help secure the release” of Cecilia Sala from Iran by “contacting” Tehran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, the New York Times reported, citing two anonymous Iranian officials.
According to the American newspaper, the billionaire was contacted by Cecilia Sala's boyfriend, Daniele Raineri, "through an intermediary", shortly before Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's recent unexpected and lightning-fast visit to Mar-a-lago, Florida, to meet Donald Trump, the US president-elect.
In an interview, Rainer explained to the New York Times that he thought of contacting Musk after reading about "a channel between him and Iranian diplomats," and in light of his connection to Donald Trump, who chose him to lead, along with Vivek Ramaswamy, the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge).
The intermediary mentioned in the article is computer scientist Andrea Stroppa, whom the newspaper describes as a "collaborator" of Musk, whom Rainer asked to bring the issue of Cecilia Sala to the billionaire's attention.
Asked by the newspaper, Stroppa stated that Musk had "marked" the request, specifying, however, that he was unaware of his alleged involvement in the case.
The Tesla CEO already met with the Iranian ambassador to the UN in November, weeks before the Italian journalist's arrest, at her New York residence, to discuss tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The two officials who spoke to the New York Times also specified that Musk would have contacted the ambassador again "immediately after" Meloni's visit to Florida.
