During the attack on Israel on October 1, Iran fired about 200 rockets at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Among them, there was a weapon that had not been used before: the new Fattah hypersonic missile.
The name of the missile, developed by Pasdaran and unveiled in June 2023, can be translated as "conqueror" or "victorious" and its characteristics make it capable of avoiding air defense systems.
"Fattah" are noted for their high speed and maneuverability: in yesterday's bombings in Tehran they were used to destroy the radar of the Israeli Arrow anti-missile systems.
What are Fattah hypersonic missiles?
The first announcement regarding the production of the Fattah missile is dated November 10, 2022, the 11th anniversary of the death of Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, the "father" of the Iranian missile program. When the missile was discovered 15 months ago, Pasdaran leaders extolled the weapon's characteristics, "capable of piercing all missile defense systems."
Also present at the ceremony was the then Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi, who died at the age of 63 in an accident while traveling in a helicopter in the Tabriz region, bordering Azerbaijan, on May 19, 2024. Another feature is its high maneuverability and ability to pass through radar systems: being "mobile", it can avoid anti-missile systems, avoid air defenses, overcome and destroy any type of shield.
In addition, according to information published by the Guardian, the missile also has a very long range of about 1,400 km. According to these figures, the Fattah missile launched by Iran reached Israel in just 7 minutes, leaving very little time for the Israeli military to identify the threat and prepare its defenses.
An already formidable weapon, but one that could become even more: these missiles are designed to be armed with nuclear warheads should Tehran continue to develop its atomic program.
