WHO raises the alarm: Measles cases increase by over 200% in Europe
Measles cases have risen by more than 200 percent in the European region over the past year amid a global surge. This is the alarm raised by the WHO in its recently published annual report.
According to the joint report by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were more than 306,000 cases in the region, which includes parts of Central Asia, in 2023, up from about 99,700 in 2022.
According to the report, there were 10.3 million cases of measles worldwide last year. This represented a 20 percent increase in cases worldwide by 2022.
Measles is a highly contagious virus that mostly affects children, but it can be prevented with two doses of vaccines. It can lead to health complications and death.
Coverage of 95 percent or more of a country or community is necessary to prevent measles outbreaks.
The report estimates that globally only 83 percent of children received a first dose of a measles vaccine last year, and just under three-quarters received a second dose.
