The scary prediction of the Greek seismologist: This is when Istanbul will be hit by an earthquake over 8 Richter
Greek seismologist Efthymios Lekkas explains the reasons why he thinks there should be an immediate earthquake in Istanbul.
He says that the tectonic plate of Anatolia has a part of the last crack that should have broken in 2020, when the Turkish authorities expected the earthquake, but that the shaking is not happening yet.
"The international scientific community has pointed out that an earthquake should occur immediately in Istanbul. Within the next five years, this would lead to the release of energy and the reduction of underground tensions", he told ERT, reports Ta Nea, explaining that he says "must" because it is the last part of the plate break, what will happen next to bring stability.
"The Anatolian plate consists of 13 parts, 13 segments. 12 of them are broken. The last part that broke, that is, caused a big earthquake, was the year 1999 in Nikomedia (Izmit, suburb of Istanbul).
The last part that has not moved since 1911 until now is the one located south of Istanbul, in the underwater space. International scientific groups had calculated that it should have broken by 2020, when the seismic shaking was expected. The longer it is delayed, the energy and tensions between the plates increase and a bigger earthquake can occur ," he added.
In any case, the seismologist underlines, " in the next five years there should be a big earthquake because over time the earthquake from 7.8 becomes bigger and goes to 8, goes to 8.2. So, there will be great damages and losses" , said Lekkas.
Istanbul has been waiting to be hit by a powerful earthquake for years. The scientists' alarm has put the Turkish government and the Istanbul municipality in trouble because of the old buildings which may not withstand the seismic wave. What is expected to happen to Istanbul from the earthquake, which is expected to be the largest, was also the focus of the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Immamoglu, during the election campaign.
