"Free the hostages before I take office", Trump warns Hamas: There

US President-elect Donald Trump has warned Hamas that it will pay severe consequences if the Israeli hostages are not released before he takes office on January 20.

In a post on social networks, Trump warned that whoever is responsible for the hostages will be hit hard.

"If the hostages are not released before January 20, 2025, the date I proudly take office as President of the United States, the Middle East and those responsible for these atrocities against humanity will face hell," he said.

Trump's warning comes after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's son Yair and the prime minister's wife Sara at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Trump has made it clear earlier, through statements from his representatives, that he wants a ceasefire agreement for the hostages completed by the time he takes office, but the latest statement is one of the harshest he has made.

During their 2023 attack on Israel, Hamas-led militants took more than 250 people hostage, according to Israeli records, including Israeli-American dual citizens. About half of the 101 foreign and Israeli hostages still held in Gaza are believed to be alive.

Hamas has called for an end to the war and a total Israeli withdrawal from Gaza as part of any deal to release the remaining hostages. On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the war will continue until Hamas is eradicated and no longer poses a threat to Israel.

On Monday, Hamas said 33 hostages in Gaza had been killed during the nearly 14-month war between the Palestinian militant group and Israel in the enclave, without giving their nationalities.
