The search operation in Novi Sad ends, 14 dead are confirmed! Serbia declares

Today has been declared a day of mourning for Serbia after yesterday's tragedy where 14 people lost their lives when the roof of a railway station collapsed.

The Serbian Minister of the Interior, Ivica Dacic, stated that the search and rescue operation has ended and that this was the final balance of the victims, while they have not been identified. On the other hand, all the injured received life-threatening injuries.

"We are dealing with very serious injuries, we are dealing with young people. The last injured has already been intubated and has come to the Clinical Center of Vojvodina", said the director of the KKV, Vesna Turkulov. Officials said that a minor girl was among the victims, Serbian media reported.

The concrete and steel structure collapsed at a moment when people were down, some on benches, some nearby, as there is also a bus stop there. According to eyewitnesses, there were no indications that a tragedy could happen, the structure collapsed in a few seconds and there was no way for people to be saved.

It should also be noted that the Railway Station building has been reconstructed twice in the last two years. However, the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Goran Vesič, says that a part of the station, specifically the collapsed tent, has not been reconstructed, saying that this can be seen in the construction permit.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, in his speech to the citizens said that he demands from the investigative authorities that the persons responsible for what happened be prosecuted and severely punished.

In the meantime, citizens gathered in Freedom Square in the center of Novi Sad, leaving flowers and lighting candles. The flags of the Republic of Serbia, the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the city of Novi Sad are lowered to half-mast. The Government of Serbia declared Saturday, November 2, Day of Mourning in Serbia, while the mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Gjuric, declared three days of mourning in that city.
